Technology Consumption Journal – Blog 14 – 2.16.14

Over the past two days, I made a list of all the technology that I came in to contact with. I consider technology to be any sort of tool that helps me accomplish a task. Here are the technologies I used:

  • Smartphone (including all the apps that are on it)
  • Headphones and earbuds
  • Laptop (including all of the software on it)
  • Keyboard
  • Wireless mouse
  • Ethernet Cord
  • Power strip
  • Stapler
  • Hole puncher
  • Scissors
  • Pencils and pens
  • Shoes
  • Zippers
  • Buttons
  • Elevator
  • Hair straightener
  • Water bottle
  • Fridge
  • Microwave
  • Heating system
  • Tempurpedic mattress pad
  • Magnets
  • Desk and chair
  • Television
  • Stairs
  • Lights
  • Paper
  • Water bottle
  • Utensils and dishware (plates, bowls, forks, spoons, knives, cups, etc)
  • Dish soap
  • Toothbrush, toothpaste, and floss
  • Nail clipper
  • Shower
  • Sink
  • Door
  • Clock
  • Toiletries (shampoo, conditioner, comb, etc)
  • Lock and key
  • Printer
  • The bus (and all the technologies that come with it, such as wheels, the engine, speakers, traffic lights,  etc)

To pick a specific object to talk about, I’d talk about zippers. When most people first hear the word “technology,” the image of a zipper probably doesn’t appear; however, I was thinking about how often they’re used.  Right now, I have a zipper on my jacket, pants, coat, backpack, and pencil case. Without zippers, it may be harder to close containers or to easily bundle up. From doing this activity, I learned how dependent we are on technology. A lot of what we do, from when we wake up to when we go to bed, involves technology. Furthermore, a lot of these tasks wouldn’t be possible without the use of technology. If we didn’t have pen or paper, we wouldn’t be able to write anything down. If we didn’t have cell phones, we wouldn’t easily communicate with each other over distances.
